Neisler’s Edisto Sugar Born 18 April 1991 Lost 9 February 2007 Neisler’s Edisto Sugar was a great Boykin Spaniel who survived the odds and lived longer than a special dog probably should have. In the final days she was in pain and barely held on until our daughter was born. I think she wanted to make sure that I had someone near to take her place. Sugar experienced a lot with me during our 13 years together. I “inherited” her from the Neisler’s of Lake Waccamaw and regrettably never took her back to see her original parents. They wouldn’t have believed that she lived this long. Sugar loved Lake Waccamaw...so much so, that it came to the point that I almost couldn’t go sailing without her. It was torture for her to see her master on the water without her. When we got a power boat, she was always there, front and center, for the ride around Lake Waccamaw in Jimmy Buffett’s old Hewes LT21. She had more balance than James Brown on the dance floor. In later years, she enjoyed her summers swimming in her own swimming pool in Pinehurst. I am certain that exercise had something to do with her longevity, as well as a healthy diet and NO table scraps! Sugar’s favorite pastime was riding in the car, like all good spaniels. But her biggest thrill was to bark at mud puddles when I would drive the car through them. If a dog could have a sweet bark, Sugar had one. Her breeders were John and Anne Chapell of Leesville, South Carolina (half way between Columbia and Augusta). I always respected the way the Chapel’s ran their kennel, as well as their ability to stay above the fray of Boykin Spaniel Society politics. I purchase two Boykins from them. Well Sugar, you knew that I had a new girl in my heart and that it was time for you to go chase those Wild Turkeys in the Sky. You were the best companion a man could have ever asked for and we will love you forever! Toby Wells Pinehurst, NC February 2007 |
